First Question Background: Given the current mix of energy sources in NJ (40% nuclear, more than 50% natural gas, less than 5% renewables), various paths are possible to get to 100% renewable sources of energy. For example, we might first replace natural gas, as a greenhouse gas-emitting source, with renewables. Energy efficiency will also have a role – we all need to make sure we are using only as much energy as we actually need, and using energy efficient appliances.
Question: What path do you recommend to get to 100% renewables?
Question 2. Background: In the last 10 years, NJ has gone from 1.5% renewables to 2.4%. On the other hand, California has reached 30% renewables with aggressive targets for growth of renewables. Renewables must be ramped up to reach the current target of reducing GHG emissions to 80% of 2006 levels by 2050 or any proposed targets of reaching 100% renewable electricity generation.
Question: How fast can we ramp up renewables, and what are the most important issues affecting how fast we can go?
