Sustainable Business Practices

Redefining success within a triple bottom line framework. PEOPLE. PLANET. PROFIT.

What does “success” mean when it comes to running a business or earning a living? For some it means maximizing shareholder value or personal wealth by achieving monopoly profits in a zero sum market. For a growing number of business leaders, it’s more complicated than that….and also more potentially rewarding.  These businesses are combining ambition and innovation to run businesses that are profitable while also being as socially and environmentally responsible as possible.

Why It Matters

An economic system designed to reward businesses whose primary focus is to maximize short-term profits, regardless of any resulting social or environmental impacts, is unsustainable and undercuts resilience.  That’s why reframing success within a triple bottom line framework with supporting public policies represents a pathway to an economic future that is more dynamic, fair, sustainable, and resilient.

Circular Economy

Our current “take > make > waste” system is resulting in increasing levels of resource scarcity, environmental damage and harm to public health. Transitioning to a system of “circularity” is a key aspect of becoming more sustainable. Recycling along is not enough.  Many companies are leading the way with innovative solutions to this growing problem.  Public policy also has a key role to play, and New Jersey continues to implement laws, rules, and programs designed to move us in the right direction with NJSBN’s active engagement and support.
