Resilience and Sustainability

A resilient and sustainable economy is one that:

Enables people to meet their needs and lead good lives without hindering the ability of future generations to do the same.

Maintains the resilience and regenerative capacity of Earth’s systems upon which all life depends.

Adapts to changing conditions and future risks by building resilience in order to successfully withstand sudden shocks or misfortune.

Why It Matters

Resilience and sustainability are strengthened or weakened based on whose interests economies and businesses are designed to serve and how they function.

Businesses are increasingly proving that it’s possible to be financially successful while also being socially and environmentally responsible. But public policy also plays a key role since it establishes the rules and incentives that influence a company’s goals, priorities, and how they go about achieving them. Public policy influences who has a competitive advantage: those businesses that prioritize balancing the long-term interests of all key stakeholders vs. those that focus on maximizing short-term profits while shifting costs and risks to others.

Active Initiatives

Clean Water is Good for Business

As a member of ASBN’s Clean Water is Good for Business initiative, NJSBN helps assemble a broad coalition of business voices to advocate for reduced surface water pollution, better water infrastructure, and policies that increase resiliency to floods and droughts.

These campaigns are bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to shift the dialogue on water issues so that it encompasses a greater balance of business perspectives and emphasizes the importance of clean water to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life.

Green Infrastructure

Under today’s climate trends, the art and science of managing stormwater is getting more complicated. Stormwater runoff pollutes the majority of New Jersey’s rivers, streams, and lakes. The increasing frequency, severity, and costs of flood events poses a greater threat to many local economies and residential property values.

Implementing green infrastructure is a way to mitigate flood-related risks and build resilience. Stormwater utilities have proven to be an effective way for communities to raise dedicated funding for investing in green infrastructure and maintaining vibrant main street business districts.
