The U.S. House is considering H.R. 3898, the Promoting Efficient Review for Modern Infrastructure Today, or PERMIT Act. While the bill claims to cut red tape and speed up permitting under the Clean Water Act, the reality is far more concerning.
The PERMIT Act would gut critical clean water protections by weakening oversight and shifting the burden of pollution onto communities. This means higher water treatment costs, increased legal liability, and reputational risks, particularly for businesses that depend on clean, reliable water sources to operate and grow.
Rather than supporting long-term economic stability, public health, and environmental resilience, the PERMIT Act prioritizes short-term regulatory relief for polluters.
If passed, it would make it easier for major industrial players to contaminate rivers, lakes, and streams, undermining the Clean Water Act, one of our nation’s most important environmental safeguards. That’s bad for public health, bad for local economies, and bad for business.
